History of the Worcestershire Branch
of the Richard III Society 2015 - 2018

2015

Debate on Richard III’s importance and talks on Cecily Neville (Joanna Laynesmith), Henry V and Agincourt (Max Keen), Richard Duke of Gloucester as Lord Protector and High Constable of England (Annette Carson), Lady Burgh’s Seamstress (Sarah Thursfield), and the Duke of Clarence.

Trips to Worcester Cathedral Library and Baddesley Clinton.

Other meetings were the AGM at The Oaks at Harvington, a musical afternoon with Ian Churchward of The Legendary Ten Seconds playing his songs about Richard III, and the Bring and Share Christmas Tea at Upton Snodsbury with wine and juice bought from branch funds.

The branch had a display for one day in the main marquee at the Tewkesbury Medieval Fair, courtesy of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society, with the Gloucestershire Branch doing the honours on the second day.

The branch made a donation to Fotheringhay Church instead of sending each other Christmas cards.

2016

Our 30th anniversary year. We received a congratulations letter from Dr Phil Stone the chairman of the Richard III Society.

Sadly founder member Lesley Anne Scott died this year. 8 members of the branch attended her funeral.

Talks on King John (Ashley Mantle and Max Keen); Royal Marriage Secrets (John Ashdown-Hill); On the Trail of the Mortimers (Philip Hume).

Visit to the Hive, the joint public and university library in Worcester; Huddington Church and Oddingley Church; Walk around medieval Worcester.

AGM and talk on Margaret of York (Peter Nutting); 30th Anniversary Banquet; Demonstration of medieval cookery and tasting; Bring and Share Christmas Lunch at Upton Snodsbury with wine and juice bought from branch funds.

The branch had a display on Saturday 9 July in the main marquee at the Tewkesbury Medieval Fair, courtesy of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society, with the Gloucestershire Branch doing the honours on the second day.

The branch made a donation to the Newport Medieval Ship instead of sending each other Christmas cards.

2017

The branch had a display on Saturday 8 July in the main marquee at the Tewkesbury Medieval Fair, courtesy of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society. We made a £30 donation to the Society.

The branch made a donation of £50 to the Edgar Tower Make Your Mark appeal, for a stone in the renovated tower at Worcester Cathedral to bear the initials RIII. The dedication in the Commemorative Ledger will say: Richard III Society Worcestershire Branch. To commemorate visits by Richard III to Worcester. The Ledger will be kept in the Cathedral Library. Unfortunately the initials are going to be on the inside so we can’t get to see the stone, but we will be sent a plan showing its location and a photograph of it. We already have a certificate to mark the donation.

Talks on Richard III and the Alcester connection (Julian Davey), Joan de Geneville, the Lady of Ludlow, and other Mortimer Ladies (John Grove), Richard Duke of York ( Matthew Lewis), Jack Cade’s Rebellion (Ashley Mantle).

AGM and talk on What was Wrong with the Late Medieval Church (Carol Southworth).

Visits to Warwick and the Beauchamp Chapel, Maxstoke Castle, Broughton Castle, Tewkesbury.

Bring and Share Christmas Lunch at Upton Snodsbury with wine and juice bought from branch funds.

The branch made a donation of £50 to Worcester Cathedral instead of sending each other Christmas cards. This went towards the £500,000 challenge, a major project is to conserve and bring into public use the 12th century undercroft of College Hall.

2018

Collage of 2018 meetings.

The branch had a stall on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July in the main marquee at the Tewkesbury Medieval Fair, courtesy of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society. We made a £50 donation to the Society.

Talks on The Conways of Arrow and Ragley (Julian Davey); Late Medieval Music (Tim Porter); The History of Dudley Castle (Max Keen); AGM and The Bishop's Palace Worcester (Jane Tinklin), and The Traitor's Arms (Posy Hill).

First Branch Study Day on Saturday 12 May at Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall - a huge success. Researching One King (Dr Heather Falvey), Two Princes (Matthew Lewis) and the Last Medieval Queens (Dr Joanna Laynesmith).

Guided walk round the site of the battle of Tewkesbury; evening walk around Stratford Upon Avon; visit to Much Marcle and Kilpeck churches, and to St Leonard's at the Beauchamp Community in Newland.

Bring and Share Christmas Lunch at Upton Snodsbury with wine and juice bought from branch funds.

Dr John Ashdown-Hill died on 18 May and was buried at the green burial site of Oakfield Wood, Wrabness, Essex on Monday 18 June. The branch collection instead of sending Christmas cards was sent to Oakfield Wood to help buy trees in memory of John.
