The Cockleshell Pilgrim by Katherine Lack

In 1986, the remains of a man dressed as a pilgrim were found in Worcester Cathedral. But who was he? Why was he given such an important burial place? When did he die? He has been identified as a wealthy dyer from Worcester, who went on the long pilgrimage to Compostela in Spain, to visit the shrine of St James.

This is the fascinating story of his journey across medieval Europe, and the story of the whole pilgrim industry, which was very well organised in the early fifteenth century. A wonderful book about an ordinary man who became extraordinary by his achievement.

Sir William Stanley Of Holt: A Yorkist Martyr? by Jean M. Gidman

William supported Edward IV and prospered during his reign, but wasn’t so keen on Richard III and caused his death at the battle of Bosworth by joining Henry Tudor at the crucial moment.

Again William grew wealthy under Henry VII, but after ten years was beheaded for treasonably supporting Perkin Warbeck. Was it a trumped up charge or was William still a Yorkist at heart?

This is the first book solely about Sir William. Jean M. Gidman traces his life, career and fall.

Copies can be obtained direct from the author by sending a cheque for £6.70 payable to Rosalba Press, to Mrs J. M. Gidman, 81 Halsall Lane, Ormskirk, Lancashire, L39 3AT. The book costs £5.95 and post and packing is 75p. Rosalba Press is the publishing arm of the Yorkshire Branch.
