Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre

Bill and I went to the battlefield on 22 August. It’s years since we’ve been and I wanted to see the new exhibition and facilities.

The exhibition is excellent and we easily spent an hour and a half looking round. We had fun with the interactive features obviously designed to impress school parties. I struggled to hold a chain mail shirt as it was so heavy. The brigantine was a good fit but I wouldn’t want to wear one! Bill tried on all the helmets and was horrified at how little he could see.

The archaeological research is covered at the end of the exhibition, with all three possible sites of the battle explained. Then it’s into the shop, though you can get into this as well without going round the exhibition. Annette’s book was prominently on display both in the shop and by the reception desk for the exhibition.

The new restaurant is built around the oak frame of a medieval tithe barn rescued from Sandiacre in Derbyshire and looks magnificent. So is the food! I was very pleased to see how full it got at lunchtime.

We only found Richard’s standard flying but weren’t really bothered that the others weren’t there! We visited the well and the site where Richard is supposed to have died. Both monuments had white roses on them. Finally we explored some of the walks around the site which are well signposted, finishing up by St James’ Church in Sutton Cheney. It was closed though.

The new medieval village, Ambion Parva, wasn’t open when we visited but looks very realistic. Altogether a good day out.
