Richard III Gold Angel

Spink have announced that they are to offer for sale on December 4 a very rare Richard III Angel found near the site of the Battle of Bosworth in Leicestershire.

The gold coin dates from c. 1484 and bears the king's personal emblem of the boar and is in pristine condition.

It is estimated to fetch £12,000 - £15,000 (though another one sold for £27,000!)

The Angel coin does not depict Richard as such. The obverse shows St Michael spearing a dragon, surrounded by the text “ricad di gra rex angl z franc” - the king's name is double-struck - whilst the reverse shows a shield within ship, small cross above dividing 'R' and a rose, with the text “per crvce tvam salva nos xpc rede”.

You can buy a reproduction one for £6.50 from www.dorchesters.com
